A brief discussion of the power of reflection.
A mirror shows who, what, when, where, why and how we are. But we must look closely. Seeing clearly; we discover the opportunity of change.
The mirror is a metaphor used in children’s stories, science, metaphysics, music, etc. What is seen? Is one capable of seeing more than just an appearance? Can we see our energy? The how, when, where and why of interaction and happenings? A mirror enables the revelation. Perhaps the response is revulsion or fascination. But eventually to learn simply to observe with equanimity. The secret is in the question asked of the mirror. It’s the story of “mirror mirror on the wall, who is the… who is the greatest, most beautiful, etc.?” Often, one fails to ask the essential question. Who looks in the mirror, asks the question, and of whom? This is the similar form of the genie granting 3 wishes, the gatekeeper asking for the password, or choosing the holy grail.
What happens in the reflection… fighting itself… for itself? What is reality or is the image mistaken reality? The mirror and reflection are a trap; endlessly capturing the seer or the hunter being captured by the game. The difficulty is once captured one does not notice the opportunity to change. Reflection offers a chance to change, but this opportunity is often overlooked. The image just ends up fighting with themselves.
All Along the Watchtower, Bob Dylan, 1967
“There must be some way out of here,” said the joker to the thief
“There’s too much confusion, I can’t get no relief
Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth
None of them along the line know what any of it is worth”
“No reason to get excited,” the thief, he kindly spoke
“There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke
But you and I, we’ve been through that, and this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late”
All along the watchtower, princes kept the view
While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too
Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl
Blessings,
Tim
