The Sovereignty of No Kings

A brief discussion of kings and sovereignty.

Last weekend, June 14th, 2025, at the local gathering of “No Kings.” It got me wondering… often a dangerous thing. Are we forgetting that we are the kings and queens of our being? Being a king or queen, the responsibility is to our realm of influence. Which is usually our family, friends, and community. Have we abrogated our responsibilities to care, support and enhance our realms of influence? Along with deep feelings of gratitude and respect of them also being sovereign, free and responsible in their realm to the best of their ability.

It is not only the capacity of each being to be sovereign and free. But more importantly our capacity to support and uplift their ability and capacity until they can do so for themselves. Is it our responsibility to family, friends and community to support, care and protect them as they learn to be sovereign.

The point is that the “no kings” protest may be derailing or diverting us from our responsibilities to ourselves and one another. The premise is, that each person is a sovereign being. That each child is a prince or princess in training to become sovereign. As one steps into their being-ness, their responsibility is to first reign over themselves. And second is to be compassionate and graceful with others within their realm. Are we encouraging this free, independent and sovereign endeavor?

It is not about some far off king and kingdom. But the kingdom of oneself and one’s community. It’s the real world of existence and being where one has influence and reign. Otherwise, we are jousting at far-off phantom windmills.

Next time you meet another person. Imagine that you are meeting with a king, queen, princess or prince. And you are the sovereign representative of your kingdom. How will you present yourself and interact with another sovereign?

Blessings,

Tim
